# How to Calculate the Weight of MS Plates?

## What are mild steel plates or ms plates?

Before discussing how to calculate the weight of ms plates, let first understand what they are:

Mild steel plates (ms plates) are galvanized steel sheets, and they are frequently employed in a range of building applications. It is simple to work with and can be simply shaped into any form in accordance with the demands of the building operation. It is used in many applications because it can be simply cut and drilled to fit the needs. Despite being weaker than stainless steel plate, mild steel plate has stronger capabilities than carbon steel.

Steel typically has a tensile strength of 50,800 to 60,900 pounds per square inch, which is adequate to hold cars across a bridge or people and equipment within a structure.

Mild steel has low carbon content (about 0.05-0.25%), making it ductile and easy to form.

These ms plates come in a number of shapes that may be used via processes including rolling and bending. Mild steel plates may be used in bending and rolling processes and come in a range of forms and sizes. Because of its high strength-to-weight ratio and good corrosion resistance, steel is an efficient structural material, particularly when employed to create girders and rafters.

The following characteristics make mild steel a fantastic material for a variety of applications:

• Due to its high degree of ductility, it may deform without ever breaking or suffering any damage.
• It has a high degree of energy as well as a high level of toughness.
• The rusting in mild steel plates is not a tough process since it is corrosion-resistant.
• It grows stronger and more efficient as the temperature rises.

The most typical uses for mild steel plates are as follows:

• Building projects
• Commercial structures
• Projects for the housing complex

## How to Calculate the Weight of MS plates?

Here, we provide the method to calculate the weight of mild steel plates (ms plates) with different dimensions and sizes.

### Formula to calculate weight of MS plates:

Basically if we want to obtain the weight of anything, we multiply its density by dimensions. In the case of ms plates, we usually express the weight of plates per m2 of plate area.

Density of steel plates = 7850 Kg/m3 = 7.85 g/cm3

Weight (W) = 7.85 * ts

where: W is the weight of ms plate in Kg/m2

ts = thickness of ms plate

Mild steel plates exist in multiple thicknesses such as 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12.5 mm, etc.

Based on the previous equation, we can calculate the weight per unit area for various thickness of plates:

For ts = 6 mm, the weight of the ms plate = 7.85 * 6 = 47.1 Kg/m2

For ts = 8 mm, the weight of the ms plate = 7.85 * 8 = 62.8 Kg/m2

For ts = 10 mm, the weight of the ms plate = 7.85 * 10 = 78.5 Kg/m2

and so on for various thickness of plates.

The previous calculations assume the area of plate as 1 m * 1m.

In some cases, we would like to calculate the total weight of ms plates, so instead of assuming the area as 1m*1m, we multiply by the total area of plate.

For example, the weight of 2m * 3m ms plate with a thickness of 6 mm will be equal to:

Weight = 47.1 Kg/m2* 2 m * 3 m = 47.1 * 6 = 282.6 kg.
